Today is Father Theodore Hesburgh's 90th birthday. Father Ted, as he is affectionately known, was the President of the University of Notre Dame for 35 of the most important years of the University's history (1952-1987). He's basically responsible for making Notre Dame what it is today - one of the greatest universities in the nation.
He's served popes and presidents and was a major advocate for the civil rights movement in the 50's and 60's. He's a great man who has done great things. If you want to learn more about his remarkable life, I recommend reading his autobiography God, Country, Notre Dame.
