Notre Dame has hired a new Athletic Director, Jack Swarbrick. Why do I mention this? Well, it's ND news for one. Second, Swarbrick is the former president of the Indiana Sports Corporation. As you can see from the first line in the article linked above, he was "One of the key players in bringing the Super Bowl to Indianapoils" which means that he went head to head with my dad on the deal.
My dad thought that bringing the Super Bowl to Indianapolis was a great idea, but that it should not be done at the expense of the taxpayers. One of the major requirements of getting the Super Bowl in Indy was for the local and State governments to waive sales and hotel tax on league-reserved rooms. Dad didn't like that idea. Unfortunately for him, he was just about the only person in the state that thought that way. Everyone else just wanted the Super Bowl.
This is not to say that Swarbrick is an evil man. I would guess that my dad would have nice things to say about Swarbrick because he is responsible for bringing a lot of business (and therefore tax revenues) to Indiana. Regardless, let's hope he's the right choice for AD at ND.
