Rubbed: The Musical

A few weeks ago I was asked to direct pH's first musical.  I know what you're thinking.

"Ford hates musicals."
"Ford can't write music."
"Can Ford sing?"
"Man, Ford is an asshole."

All those things are true and I decided to direct the show, anyway.  Thankfully, Howie had already written the songs and worked with a musical director to write the music.  I was off the hook for writing music.  Directors don't have to sing, so I didn't need to worry about that and being an asshole is a pretty essential part of being a director.  All that's left is the fact that I hate musicals.

Now, it's not entirely true that I hate all musicals.  I like one musical: Avenue Q.  I hate all the rest - even Rent.  Especially Rent.  Why, then, would someone want me do direct his musical?  I have no idea, but it's happening.

I'd like to tell you that I'll take this musical and turn it into the kind of musical that people that hate musicals love.  I won't do that.  First, it would completely destroy Howie's vision of this show and while I don't have to cowtow to everything Howie wants I still don't have the right to destroy his vision.  Most importantly, I'm not that clever.  What am I going to do with this show?  I'm going to try to make it the best show it can possibly be.  I know that I can direct a good scene and I'll make sure the scenes are tight.  The songs will be harder for me.  I haven't spent a lot of time watching and listening to musicals so I'll have to rely on others in the cast to help me with the songs.  Fortunately, I'm working with a very talented and knowledgeable cast.  I think it will be a show that people will enjoy.

I'll probably hate it, though.
